Music Notes: Milkshake, Berkner and Imagination Movers

CD: Got a Minute? by Milkshake

Milkshake’s Got a Minute? grew from the band’s short video pieces for PBS Kids, funded through a Kickstarter campaign. Inspired by the challenge of saying a lot in very little time, the duo created an energetic CD where no song overstays its welcome. Milkshake’s music seems simple, but layers of meaning come through in singer Lisa Mathew’s fizzy vocals. The album is a joy, especially for kids under 10. The songs are short yet pack a wallop, as in the bluesy lament “Fish,” where Lisa ponders setting her pet free. “Sally Had a Green Thumb” is infectious musically and environmentally. The gritty yet positive “Baltimore” should be that city’s official song. “Lookin’ Out the Window” refreshes the standard road-trip tune with a country twang. And the cover of “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” reclaims the song while honoring Tiny Tim’s classic.
