Spotlight: Made Institute’s Summer Camps
A unique offering in the Philly area, Made Institute’s summer camps for kids and teens offer an opportunity for young people to get connected to the fashion industry — and even get a head start on networking for internships. The institute is a school licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education that follows a direct-to-learn approach to give students projects that help them build necessary skills for working in fashion. The camps provide guidance for beginners as well as those who already have experience or a developing passion for design, but even those who just want to broaden their horizons still get to learn a practical skill like sewing, which is not as widely taught as it used to be. For those interested in practicing their skills after camp, there are after school and weekend sewing classes.
The Kids’ Summer Camp introduces ages 7 to 12 to mood boards, sketching, sewing and building a portfolio, while the Teen Summer Camp for ages 13 to 17 delves into more fashion research and trends, with focused projects such as creating a 90s slip dress, complete with a professional photoshoot. Once campers have a portfolio, camp staff can connect them with their network of creatives, fashion designers and brands to find a match to the camper’s individual style for potential internships. Camp supplies are provided for kids, but teens are given a shopping list that can be purchased through the school’s shop.
