Newark is best-known as a college town, as it’s where many students live while attending the University of Delaware. While it’s liveliest during the school year, there’s still plenty to do with your family year-round in this charming small town.

Local History

Learn about Newark’s history and how the town has grown and developed over the years at the Newark History Museum. Housed in the historic Newark Train Station, this free museum features exhibits dating back to 1758. While the museum is currently closed for renovations, it’s a stop on the Newark Heritage Trail, a self-guided tour of the town’s historic buildings.

Get Ready To Roll

Newark boasts a surprising amount of skating venues. For ice skating in the winter and early spring, the University of Delaware’s Fred Rust Ice Arena hosts open skating sessions and themed family fun events. The Patriot Ice Center also has plenty of offerings, including free hockey programs for anyone interested in trying out the sport. If you prefer roller skating, the Christiana Skating Center, located near neighboring Ogletown and Brookbend, may be more up your alley, and even has a kids skate free program.
