Encouraging your kids to adapt good tooth-brushing habits at a young age can help them keep their teeth healthy for life.

Parents may not know where to start with dental hygiene for children, so we’ve compiled this guide from several local dental sources, including Children’s Dental Health, which has locations in Pennsylvania and Delaware.

0 Months to 1 Year

Wipe down baby’s gums twice a day.

When the first tooth forms, brush it twice a day.

Use a rice-sized amount of toothpaste.

Lift baby’s lip to check for cavities once a month.

1-3 years

Schedule a dental visit before first birthday.

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

Let your child choose a toothbrush and toothpaste.

A story, song or game can make brushing go by faster.

3-6 years

Start brushing child’s teeth before handing off to child to finish.

Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.

Can start using electric toothbrush

6 and older

Parents should supervise brushing until 7-8 years old.

Should floss regularly

Can start using adult toothbrush
