It’s no surprise that the names of many good things feature the word mother. From the world around us, consider Mother Nature, Mother Earth, mother of pearl and the mother of thousands plant. Techies know the importance of a motherboard, and there’s nothing like a read-aloud from a Mother Goose book. If you’ve come upon the motherlode, it’s time to celebrate. And if you’ve arrived on the mothership, you’re likely in the center of the action.
While Mother’s Day arrives in early May, Mom is honored by name every day in the Philadelphia area at a variety of popular locations. And like Mother’s Day, which is celebrated in more than 50 countries around the world, some of these hometown favorites showcase international — and delicious — flavors.
Mom Mom’s Kitchen is a popular Polish restaurant in Philadelphia, with some outstanding menu items that are traditional but with a local twist, like Philly Cheesesteak Pierogi. Known both near and far, Mom Mom’s Kitchen was featured on a long time Food Network hit, “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”
Philadelphia residents and visitors looking for tasty Italian food will certainly enjoy Momma Mia’s Pizzeria, while those on the Jersey side may find their way to Mama Marie Italian Market, a family-owned deli in Pitman, or Mama’s Meatballs and Pizzeria in Pennsauken, as Dave Portoy did in 2022 as part of his Barstool Sports One Bite Pizza Reviews series.
Maman, an inviting French-style coffee house, is perfect for a light bite or lovely lunch in Princeton, New Jersey, and Ardmore, Pennsylvania, while Bao Mama in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, is a go-to for Chinese bao buns, dumplings, bubble waffles and more.
Around Gloucester County, satisfy your sweet tooth at Mama Buntz’s Donut Company in Sewell, New Jersey. This spot is famous for cake-style donuts prepared and topped right in front of customers. Try some of its creative flavors, like Lemon Blue, Fluffanutta or Squeelin’ Moose (maple icing with bacon bits!).
Dining out is great, but most family meals are enjoyed at home. Preparation can start at Mom’s Organic Market (MOM) with several locations in the Philly metro area, including Center City, Abington and Bryn Mawr, as well as Cherry Hill in New Jersey. MOM is a top-tier chain of organic grocery stores and a champion for recycling and the environment.
In addition to excellent dining destinations, Mom’s name graces some important cultural sites as well. For example, Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) is an extraordinary house of worship in Philadelphia. Founded in 1794, this beautiful Romanesque church is a National Historic Landmark and the oldest church property in the United States to be continuously owned by African Americans.

And while not technically a nod to mom, the Mutter Museum at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia still makes this list, as “mutter” is the German word for mother. The museum is actually named for American surgeon Thomas Dent Mütter, M.D. (1811-1859), who sought to improve and reform medical education — a mom-worthy goal! The exhibits include anatomical and pathological specimens, wax models and antique medical equipment and, though fascinating, are not recommended for young children.

Finally, Mother’s Cupboard Food Bank in Sewell, New Jersey, and Mothers in Charge in Philadelphia are two nonprofit organizations that make a difference every day in the lives of local families. Mother’s Cupboard provides food staples to more than 500 people every month, while Mothers in Charge focuses on violence prevention, intervention and education.
So, whether you’re a working mom, cool mom, soccer mom, tiger mom, crunchy mom, alpha mom, team mom, stay-at-home mom or some fabulous combination of mom-ness, know that mom is a special word, not just in your home but in so many places that spread joy, support and knowledge.
