With these hot summer days and the kids out of school, nothing beats taking them outside to run off that excess energy. Thanks to a $2 million renovation, they can now do that for free at the oldest public fountain in the country, which has been updated to put on a light and music show.
On Wednesday, Franklin Square, at Sixth and Race streets in Philadelphia, revealed its new Franklin Square Fountain Show for the park’s 13th birthday. The 180-year-old fountain underwent a renovation that not only modernized its infrastructure, but added colored lights and music. The fountain’s re-opening was filled with music and free food and carousel rides. As the sun scorched from above, nothing was more tempting than the fountain’s spray. Alas, a brief downpour halted the event but festivities resumed at night and fountain shows will continue until Oct. 31.
At almost any time during their visit, families are guaranteed to see a show, as a performance occurs daily every half hour from noon until 2pm and 6pm until closing. Jets shoot 
streams of water nearly 50 feet as they dance to music from Motown artists and current pop artists. The spectacle continues at night when bright LED lights illuminate the fountain with color.
For August, the park will also host theme nights on Thursdays through Sundays for its Summer Splash in the Square series. You can expect free movie nights, games, and dance parties for the whole family. Adults can check out the pop-up Oasis Cocktail Garden for a refreshing drink.
Franklin Square also offers other amenities for families, including a playground, carousel, food and mini golf.
