October is Mural Arts Month, a time to celebrate the many beautiful murals that make Philadelphia the “Mural Capital of the World.” Mural Arts, the Philadelphia-based public art program, is sponsoring a variety of events under this year’s theme of “Resilience.” Visiting the city’s murals are a great and free way to introduce your kids to art, history and community.

Messages to Our Neighbors Project Dedication
October 20, 6-7 p.m.

High school students collaborated with artist Aram Han Sifuentes to create these banners that highlight young people’s experiences of immigration.

New Freedom Theatre Mural Dedication
October 22, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Shawn Theodore’s photographs are displayed on the front of the New Freedom Theatre which chronicles African American history in the performing arts.

Coltrane Unearthed: Sharing Stories of Strawberry Mansion Legends

Mural Arts is partnering with the Strawberry Mansion Civic Association to present a series of workshops to celebrate the history of this Philadelphia neighborhood. All ages will be able to get sewing lessons and learn about the artistic legacy of Strawberry Mansion.

Super Duper Pathways to Learning Mural Dedication
October 26, 4-5 p.m.
17th & Montrose Sts., Philadelphia, PA 19146

These new street murals created in collaboration with South of South Neighborhood Association are designed to improve the safety of intersections near two elementary schools, Edwin Stanton and Chester Arthur.

Climate Justice Initiative Mural Projection and Celebration

Hear from climate activists, artists and organizers about the climate crisis in the Lenapehoking/Philadelphia region at this mural projection.

George Floyd Mural (Never Forgotten) Dedication

Tang Pharmacy, 5600 N 5th St., Philadelphia, PA 19120

This mural tribute to George Floyd on the side of Tang Pharmacy as part of the north 5th Street Revitalization Project.
