Where to Host Your Kid's Birthday Party in Philly

0

Love where you live? Of course you do. So throw the kids a birthday party that shows them what’s special, and fun, about where they’re growing up — our history, food, farms, parks, horse country, gardens. They’re all a part of who we are, so celebrate it.

Making history

Low on cost and big on education and entertainment, Philly’s historic district boasts plenty of museums and attractions with which to fill a day of discovery. Play a round of mini golf themed to the city at Franklin Square, explore the free Fireman’s Hall Museum and Science History Institute and serve up a sweet end to the fun at the popular Franklin Fountain ice cream shop.

Pick-your-own party

Searching the fields for the biggest, ripest fruits and veggies at farms or orchards is a fun, hands-on way to teach kids about where their food comes from — it’s also a great group activity. Many spots, including Highland Orchards in West Chester and Linvilla Orchards in Media, add hayrides and farm animal meet-and-greets into the mix for groups that sign up for a party package.

Flower power

Does your kid have a green thumb? Public gardens are the perfect place to marvel at extravagant floral arrangements and landscapes sure to impress junior gardeners. Opt for a group tour at Kennett Square’s Longwood Gardens, which offers an on-site, full-service restaurant or, for a casual meal, a café. In Philly, Shofuso Japanese House and Garden offers group-tour add-ons such as tea tasting, an origami lesson and traditional Japanese storytelling.

Tea-rrific taste

Pinkies up! Tea parties at sophisticated venues let kids flaunt their fancy side and dig into local culture. Consider party packages at Washington Crossing Inn in Washington Crossing — the spot where George Washington famously led his troops across the Delaware River in 1776 — or at elegant A Taste of Britain tearoom in Wayne, where parties of eight or fewer can reserve the dining room.

Flavors of Philly

Families who prefer a home-based bash can bring Philly’s culinary classics to your own kitchen! Make cheesesteaks from scratch, loaded each guest’s favorite toppings — or order from your go-to — and snack on soft pretzels, Tastykakes and homemade water ice.

Horsing around

What child doesn’t want a pony? That might not be feasible, but there are plenty of opportunities to introduce kids and their pals to the local equestrian scene: Book a pony party at Hidden Valley Horse Farm in Glen Mills, Red Hound Stables in West Chester or Plymouth Meeting’s Sandy Hill Farm. Or bring the group to the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair, running select dates May 22-June 2.
