This Colonial-era town’s filled with historic Revolutionary War sites and one of SJ’s premier downtown areas, anchored by the Mill Race Village shopping corridor.
Go: To drive to Mt. Holly, take Rte. 295 to exit 47, 20 or so miles from the Philly bridges. Several lots sprinkled around town are within walking distance of all the action.
Eat: Robin’s Nest has a pretty patio overlooking the Mill Race Creek and a rep for great soups, available in a soupy “sampler” that lets you try (and share with the kids) several varieties at once. (2-4 Washington St.)
Shop: Stuffed bears of all stripes can be found at Teddies of Mt. Holly, which carries cuddly ursines from around the world and has a special nook of antique bedtime buddies. (44 White St.)
Hunt: The Burlington County Prison Museum’s usual tours and events tend toward the intense, but the town landmark reaches out directly to families by hosting an annual treasure hunt, held this year on Sat., May 10. The search transports participants back in time and through the town, scavenging for fun clues that illuminate Mt. Holly history. (128 High St.)
Snack: Lauded as one of the top small creameries in the state, Vincent’s Homemade Ice Cream boasts lip-smacking flavors (caramel sea turtle truffle, grape nut, coconut almond joy) and water ice made with real fruit. (12 Mill St.)
Hike: Head to exit 45A to Rancocas State Park, on the Pinelands’ western edge. There, you’ll hike the Yellow Trail, short and interesting enough to engage preschoolers. Make sure to pop over to the Rancocas Nature Center, a cozy respite for hands-on nature displays and live-animal encounters.
