Cooking with Kids

One way to get those little picky eaters to eat healthier is having them help in the kitchen. So when you have a little extra time, spend time with your kiddos stirring up your (and their) favorite dishes.

Once they feel "ownership" in the meal they are more apt to eat it or at least try it! Baby steps right??

Just remember, your kitchen might be a bit messier and it may take you a bit longer but think of how much fun your children will have! I know you may think that it’s just quicker and easier to do it yourself, but think of the benefits of having them in the kitchen with you.

  • They are introduced to new types of foods
  • They learn  math concepts
  • They become more independent
  • They're more apt to try a new food because “they” made it
  • Increased self esteem
  • Increased self confidence
  • Increased creativity and imagination
  • Better self image that comes with accomplishment

Cooking with children encourages creativity, an understanding of good eating habits, responsibility and involvement. It’s never too early to start teaching your children the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods. Teaching your child healthy nutrition habits will increase their awareness and they will form better eating habits that will go with them throughout their lives.

Cooking with little ones can be a overwhelming for you and your child. To make things a bit easier, here are some great suggestions to have with you next time you mix it up in the kitchen.

  • Aprons – You can get inexpensive aprons at your local craft store or online shop.
  • Child size utensils – Montessori Services has so many wonderful child appropriate materials that will make it easier and safer for a child to cut, slice, and mix when cooking.
  • Step stool for those little ones that can’t reach the counter
  • Plenty of hand towels and wash cloths for clean up
  • Child size baking pans so they will have their own little creation that they can feel proud of

Here are some of my of my favorite recipes I like to make with my own children. We love to make:
