Your six-year-old daughter is a brain tumor survivor. How did that experience change your perspective on motherhood — and life?

Lily was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was 14 months old and this year we celebrate five years of being cancer-free. When it happened, I was in disbelief. I had done everything right — ate healthy during my pregnancy, breast fed, made homemade organic baby food and religiously moderated her health. It was a real kick to my motherhood ego: even though I thought I was the "perfect" mother — it did not matter, so much was out of my control. The entire experience has taught me that my children don't belong to me; that I cannot control them or control what will happen to them. But I can guide them and I can give them every tool necessary to succeed and overcome their challenges.

The experience opened my eyes to the entire world of childhood cancer — which is filled with so many gifts and sorrows. I've met so many inspiring mothers through our involvement in Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer.  These women have taught me that everyday is a celebration — every breath, a birthday. In our house, there are no limits to what a day can bring and we truly live life in joyful chaos!

Why did you decide to start blogging? Briefly tell us about your journey in the "blogosphere." What has been an interesting or rewarding aspect of blogging for you?

I have always been a writer; but still came late to the blogging game. I write about yoga, food, life, faith, my children and childhood cancer. I love being able to share my life experiences, and I still get surprised when people read and share what I wrote!

Share a secret to relaxation as a yoga teacher.

Breathing is the best exercise and the best meditation on the planet. I always tell my mom friends and yoga students to go hide in the bathroom, lock the door and breathe for three minutes. When you pause and stop everything to solely focus on your inhales and exhales, you emerge calm, centered and ready to go scrub the crayon off your dining room wall.
