Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens Reopens
Immersive outdoor mosaics are enchanting for all ages
Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, an immersive art venue for people of all ages that had been closed since November due to coronavirus restrictions and the winter weather, reopened on April 1. Tucked away on Philadelphia’s South Street, the Magic Gardens’ outdoor labyrinth of mosaics spans three city lots. There is also an indoor exhibition on display called “Hecho en México/Made in Mexico” that highlights the work of Mexican folk artists.
Why it’s great for kids: Artist Isaiah Zagar constructed his remarkable mosaics out of a stunning array of found objects, including bicycle wheels, colorful glass bottles and small figurines, all arranged in a looping labyrinth full of nooks and crannies to explore. The perfect spot for a game of I Spy, the Magic Gardens’ mosaics have no shortage of small details to spot, including painted animals, word tiles and faces made out of colorful shards of pottery.
The second Sunday of each month the Magic Gardens will host a PECO Family Jams program; the events are free but participants must purchase museum admission tickets. For “Mosaic Medallions,” this month’s event, which will be held on April 11 from 12-4 p.m., families will receive a kit to create their own mini mosaics with beads, mirrors, tiles and other recycled materials.
Location and hours: 1020 South St., Philadelphia, PA 19147. Open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with guided tours on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10 a.m.
COVID-19 restrictions: Everyone over the age of 5 must wear a face mask and visitors must stay at least six feet apart from one another. The capacity of the indoor galleries is capped at 10 people at a time. Guests are encouraged to use any of the multiple hand-washing and hand-sanitizing stations throughout the venue.
