The Delaware Valley has so much unique nature to explore, from dense old-growth forests to the waterfront of the Delaware Water Gap. Parks and nature centers across the area offer a safe, fun and educational way for kids to stay active and develop an appreciation for the world around them.
These are some of our favorites, along with their regular programs and annual events to look forward to.
Nature Center Events

John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum | Philadelphia, PA
The first urban refuge in the U.S., which supports hundreds of animal and plant species. Regular events include guided nature walks, crafts and classes focused on the refuge’s animal inhabitants.
The Discovery Center | Philadelphia, PA
All events hosted at this city-based nature center are free to attend, including crafting sessions, guided nature walks and family yoga classes.
The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education | Philadelphia, PA
Holds a “Sprouts” program for young children every Tuesday and Thursday, along with guided hikes and volunteer opportunities throughout the year. This center’s Halloween event, Halloween Hikes and Hayrides, is one of its most popular.
Churchville Nature Center | Churchville, PA
Regularly hosts campfires and nature walks. Also has several annual events of note, including the Rock & Mineral Expo in the spring, Holiday Craft Fair in the fall and Maple Sugar Day & Pancake Breakfast in the winter.
DuPont Environmental Education Center | Wilmington, DE
This tidal marsh in the middle of Wilmington frequently hosts free events where kids can meet marshland animal ambassadors and learn more about their species.
Brandywine Creek Nature Center | Rockland, DE
Hosts events throughout Brandywine Creek State Park, such as crafts, campfires and a monthly birdwatching hike
Briar Bush Nature Center | Abington, PA
Offers before- and after-school programs for children. Its WinterFest slate of winter-themed programs is popular, consisting of nature hikes, games, crafts and animal encounters.
State and National Parks

Delaware Water Gap Recreational Area | Bushkill, PA
Because of its location along the Delaware River, this park is a popular spot for boating and fishing. It also boasts several large waterfalls.
Valley Forge National Historical Park | King of Prussia, PA
While Valley Forge is best-known for its role in the Revolutionary War, there’s still plenty of nature to explore along its trails. The Valley Forge Revolutionary 5-Mile Run takes place every year in April, raising funds for the park’s continuing operations.
First State Historic Park | Locations throughout Delaware
A park consisting of seven sites throughout Delaware that are steeped in the history of the state’s Native American tribes and settlers. Beaver Valley is the best for outdoor exploration due to its proximity to Brandywine Creek State Park.
Gateway National Recreation Area | New Jersey and New York
Home to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, this park is a popular getaway for city-dwellers looking to spend some time in nature.
Lower Delaware National Wild and Scenic River
A national park only a short distance away from several notable state parks, including Delaware Canal State Park, Washington Crossing Historic Park and Ralph Stover State Park in Pennsylvania; and Washington Crossing State Park, Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park and Marble Hill Natural Area in New Jersey.

Palmyra Cove Nature Park | Palmyra, NJ
This park was once a waste disposal area, but has been transformed into a beautiful animal habitat over the years. The park is also notable as a nesting site for Peregrine Falcons, which are endangered in New Jersey.
Ridley Creek State Park | Media, PA
A short distance from Philadelphia, this park is full of waterfalls and riverfront scenery. Check out the Colonial Pennsylvania Farmstead, a working farm populated by historical reenactors and maintained using 18th-century farming techniques.
