Mural Arts Philadelphia, the nation’s largest public arts program, is celebrating 40 years of meaningful, thought provoking works throughout Philadelphia.
The anniversary’s theme is “Roots & Reimagination” and will reflect on the organization’s history as part of the Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network and how it evolved to what it is today.
Mural Arts has had a huge impact on Philadelphia’s atmosphere and its youth. Each year, the organization works with more than 2,000 students at 16 sites across the city through its Art Education Program.
The Art Education Program helps students find their style and a connection to their work by inviting them to take risks, share experiences and illustrate the world as they see it. Last month, Mural Arts hosted an opening night with more than 400 pieces of student artwork for sale, with the proceeds all going directly to the students themselves.
This June, Mural Arts will create a tribute mural to honor the legacy of William Still, often called the “Forgotten Father” or “Captain” of the Underground Railroad.
Still and his wife, Letitia George Still, transformed their home at 625 S. Delhi St. into a waystation for people entering the city through the Underground Railroad. The Stills also assisted in the passing of hundreds of enslaved people through the Underground Railroad.
Another new mural to look out for will pay tribute to Richard “Dick” Allen, a Phillies legend and seven-time All-star. This mural will be installed at 2221 South Broad St. in Philadelphia by renowned artist Ernel Martinez.
But these are just among the first celebrations and new installations to come all year long. Families can explore the city’s history through art with 10 public tour options for all ages.
