Delaware Valley High Schoolers Can Work Out for Free at Planet Fitness This Summer

Planet Fitness is making it easy for teens to get in shape this summer. The “High School Summer Pass” program allows teens to work out at participating Planet Fitness facilities in the Delaware Valley.

High school students ages 14 to 19 can sign up for their free Summer Pass online. Participants in the program who are younger than 18 require the signature of a parent or guardian on the Planet Fitness waiver to work out alone. The program ends Aug. 31.

Professional trainers at Planet Fitness have designed 15 trainer-led workout videos and 10 downloadable workouts for high schoolers of all fitness levels. Topics include cardio, strength, toning and sports circuits. This content is available on the free Planet Fitness app.

Why should teens work out?

According to recent studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and a study conducted by Planet Fitness, staying active significantly improves mental well-being in addition to the physical benefits. Another study published in JAMA reported that the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms in adolescents have doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A report from a study conducted by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) confirmed that the percent of adolescents who screened positive for depressive symptoms through its CHOP primary care network increased from 5% to 6.2% from pre-COVID to the COVID-19 pandemic period.

Forty-eight percent of teenagers in the United States reported that they struggled with mental health for the first time during the pandemic. Ninety-two percent of teenagers surveyed agree that regular physical activity helps them feel better mentally.

Exercise also helps promote healthier sleep, combats health conditions and provides the opportunity to be social.

What else is available to high schoolers at Planet Fitness?

Planet Fitness is conducting a scholarship sweepstakes to reward high schoolers who participate in the Summer Pass program. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to one winner in each state and the District of Columbia. A grand prize of a $5,000 scholarship will be awarded at the end of summer, according to information provided in a Planet Fitness news release.

Students can use the scholarship funds for academic or athletic activities and programs. For scholarship sweepstakes rules, go to PlanetFitness.com/sweepstakes-rules.
