Burlington City School District and Burlington County Vocational School District recently won Lighthouse Awards from the New Jersey Department of Education.

The Lighthouse Award initiative, launched in 2017, recognizes New Jersey schools and districts that have shown significant improvement in advancing educational equity. The 2021 Lighthouse Awards focus on schools and districts which support New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s vision for a stronger and fairer state.

“Equity in education can take many forms, and the Lighthouse Award recipients have improved equity in their academic offerings, the teaching workforce and school climate,” Angelica Allen-McMillan, acting commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Education, said in a press release. “They are true exemplars of Governor Murphy’s vision for a stronger, fairer New
Jersey.”

Burlington City School District was recognized for increasing equity in postsecondary enrollment and Burlington County Vocational School District was recognized for increasing equity in course enrollment.

The award-winning districts will have the chance to be involved in professional learning and networking opportunities over the next two years.

The other award recipients were Weehawken School District, Learning Community Charter School, Watchung Hills Regional High School District, The Barack Obama Green Charter High School and Hoboken School District.
