Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest

The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation and Independence Blue Cross have teamed up once again to bring the Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest back to Penn’s Landing till Labor Day. Following Winterfest, Penn’s Landing has transformed from a cozy ski lodge-like atmosphere to a vibrant, playful boathouse feel. The RiverRink is the only outdoor roller-skating rink in the city of Philadelphia.

This year, they’re offering more than just roller-skating alongside the picturesque Delaware River. You can also enjoy playing mini-golf on a 9-hole course designed by local artists like Elizabeth Hamilton and Joe Campbell, or engage in some friendly competition at the bowling, hockey and foosball tables. Feel the nostalgic touch of the classic arcade games and coin-operated kids’ rides. But if you do decide that you only want to roller-skate, don’t worry if you forget your socks; the RiverRink provides them to all skaters.

Amid the outdoor fun you can stop by the Lodge to enjoy a meal from Chickie’s and Pete’s Waterfront Crabshack. Sticking with the RiverRink’s nautical theme, this location of Chickie’s and Pete’s offers snow crab, hard shell crab, grilled and fried shrimp and steamed clams. Don’t worry, they also offer the classics like their famous crab fries with cheese sauce, boneless wings and a Philly cheesesteak. For the 21+ crowd, there’s a bar inside the Lodge that serves craft beer, cocktails and frozen margaritas. The Lodge has plenty of seating so feel free to soak up the air-conditioning as long as you want. Trust me – you’ll want to take advantage of the cool air. Summertime in Philadelphia can be pretty hot, especially after an hour or two of skating and a round of mini-golf.

Complete your day with a trip to Franklin Fountain’s location next to the mini-golf course. Enjoy hand-dipped ice cream, milkshakes, floats and freshly made lemonade from Philadelphia’s most famous ice cream parlor. Sit and eat in a rocking chair on the cabin’s wraparound porch, or get cozy in a private outdoor cabin perfect for 2-6 people. Since these seating areas have a perfect view of the river, mini-golf course and skating rink, you can relax while the kids continue to have fun.

If you still have time, take a walk down to Spruce Harbor Park. There you’ll find more dining and dessert options, including Distrito, Federal Donuts and another Franklin Fountain location. The park offers free lawn games, like a giant chessboard and shuffleboard, and fountains that visitors can splash around in. There’s plenty of seating, so relax by the river or in the shaded area by the fountains at a table or in a hammock. You can also take a kayak or paddle boat out onto the Delaware River.
