Alaistair Moock: Singing Our Way Through

CD: Finding art in a parent’s worst fear, Alastair Moock was inspired by his daughter’s illness to create Singing Our Way Through: A CD for the World’s Bravest Kids. Families with cancer have a unique voice in Moock’s joyfully determined declaration “I Am the Light.” Facing challenges as a unit informs the CD’s all-inclusive
approach to jealousy and the stresses of caregiving (“Take Care of Your Grownups”). Moock embraces uncomfortable aspects of illness, as in “When I Get Bald,” an upbeat blues tune introducing “Back Head Fred.” This CD is simultaneously brave, funny and touching.

Shine & the Moonbeams

CD: Shine & the Moonbeams’ self-titled CD combines jazzy theatrical sound and mom sensibilities to introduce an important new voice. The raucous horns of “The Melody in Me” herald a danceable celebration of life. “I Can’t Sleep” is an imaginative litany of bedtime excuses told to a wise mom. “Do You Ever Stop?” is an exhausted parent’s lament. Shine (Shawana Kemp) has created a multilayered, emotionally rich mix of musical styles and rhythms. Like a great theater piece, each song is unique in theme and rhythm, yet everything holds together as one.
