MomSpeak, which publishes selected posts from some 20 Philadelphia-area mom bloggers on MetroKids.com, has received the Gold Award for blogs in the annual Parenting Media Association (PMA) Design & Editorial Awards Competition.

MetroKids magazine’s calendar section, Family Fun, received the Silver Award for calendars of events. The magazine's book review column by Frank Lipsius was a finalist in the reviews category.

Faculty of the University of Missouri School of Journalism judged the contest. Some 100 parenting publications in the U.S., Canada and Australia comprise the PMA. The awards were presented March 9 in Atlanta, GA at the PMA’s annual convention.

Of MomSpeak, the contest judges wrote:

“Really well done aggregation of several different perspectives. The blog has a ton of variety and individual authors are freed of the need to update it constantly. Updates often and covers interesting local topics. Good tone and voice.”

In addition to new MomSpeak posts that appear each Monday, Wednesday and Friday on MetroKids.com, MetroKids magazine features a monthly MomSpeak item.

The MetroKids calendar, said the judges:

“is exceedingly thoughtful of its readers. The organization is outstanding — with sections for new and recurring events, a Spotlight On feature that highlights related events such as New Year’s Eve fireworks. But, there are three aspects that showcase the editors’ consideration of readers. One is the red all cap indication for free events. Second is the editor’s pick indicator within listings — a nice touch in lieu of a review of an event. But, most impressive is the third feature: SpecialKids. Parents must tremendously appreciate being able to look for this icon.”

Regarding the MetroKids book reviews by Frank Lipsius, the judges wrote, “The review that informs while also entertaining the reader is a bit of an art form, and this writer manages to get both right.”
