The Please Touch Museum has opened a Creative Arts Studio where kids and their parents can draw, paint, even screen print.
“The space is more geared toward being an arts studio as opposed to an arts-and-crafts space,” says Elisa Procida, communications manager for the museum. This is in part because it is more difficult to get children involved in art since many Philadelphia public schools cannot afford to offer students art instruction or studio space.
Up to 70 people can create in the 1,200-square-foot room. Educators at the Creative Arts Studio say the emphasis is on allowing kids to work independently. They are always present in the studio to assist visitors with projects and answer questions, but the visitors are encouraged to develop their own ideas rather than being told what to create.
The center provides equipment and supplies, including colored pencils, crayons, glue, scissors and colored paper. While there is no age limit, young children are the main audience in hopes they and their parents can have a collaborative art-making experience.
The studio is free with paid admission to the museum and there is no limit on how much time a visitor can spend there. The museum plans to offer programs and classes in the studio in the future.
The Please Touch Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Admission cost for Adults and children who are over the age of one is $19 and admission for children under the age of one is free.
