Brooke Ulmanis, a 5th grader at Garnet Valley Elementary School in Garnet Valley, PA, has won first place in Delaware Valley Habitat for Humanity’s 9th annual Build A House… Build A Dream contest. More than 700 5th graders from six counties participated in the competition. Brooke will receive $250 for her achievement. Judging took place Sat., April 16 at Drexel University.
For their entries, the 5th graders worked individually or in a team to create a model house that fits on a base no larger than 2-by-3 ft. using common materials such as sponges, sugar cubes or soda cans. They also wrote descriptions of 100 words or fewer.
