It’s a big year for amusement and water parks in the Delaware Valley and nearby areas. In the Poconos, a new waterpark is scheduled to open at the Snö Mountain Ski area (formerly Montage Mountain) on Memorial Day weekend.
In South Jersey, two new indoor waterparks are under construction. Coco Key Water Resort and Sahara Sam’s Oasis Indoor waterpark are scheduled to open in fall 2008 and early 2009, respectively. Adrenaline Family Entertainment purchased, expanded and extensively renovated Clemeton Park. Krazy City, an indoor amusement park, is scheduled to open in the Voorhees Town Center (formerly the Echelon Mall).
Sadly, Blue Diamond Amusement Park in New Castle, DE will not open for the 2008 season and is closed indefinitely.
The accompanying listing includes information about each park’s rates, new attractions and season opening dates. See www.metrokids.com for 10 tips for a better amusement park experience.
1. Many parks offer discount twilight rates, 2-day rates and season passes.
2. Budget $6-$10 to park at most venues. Larger vehicles pay more.
3. Purchase tickets online and print them at home to save time at the park. Be prepared to show photo identification to claim
tickets purchased online.
4. Most parks do not close during inclement weather, but some attractions shut down during electrical storms. Rain checks and refunds are not available. An exception is Sesame Place. The park offers a Sunny Day Guarantee. If it rains continuously for an hour or more during your visit, the park will give you a free ticket to come back during the current season. Splash Zone in Wildwood also offers a weather guarantee. If inclement wea-ther closes the park, your admission pass will be honored on another day.
5. For shorter lines, visit during weekdays or on rainy, overcast days. Ride popular rides early in the day; lines get longer as the day goes on.
6. Waterparks ask guests to wear swimwear without zippers, snaps, rivets or other metal or plastic pieces.
Diaper-wearing babies also need to wear waterproof diaper covers, available for purchase at some parks.
7. Don’t forget sunblock. Splash Zone offers free sunblock at the sunscreen station.
8. Most parks do not allow outside food, beverages or coolers. Sesame Place allows small coolers for baby food and medicine, but does not permit picnic lunches. At the Land of Make Believe, families can bring in food, but may not grill and coolers are not allowed.
9. Service animals such as guide dogs are permitted in most parks with a varying degree of admittance to rides and attractions. Call ahead to be sure.
10. Personal pets are not permitted in the parks. Hersheypark offers an onsite kennel, The Barking Lot, which is available from park opening until closing.
