If your go-to Thanksgiving bird usually comes from your grocery store and you’re curious about new trends in tastier — some say healthier — options, perhaps a turkey from a local farm would fill the bill.   

We’ve rounded up some info from farms in the Delaware Valley and surrounding areas to help you comparison shop and get the best turkey for your budget. 

Hot Tip: Farms have limited supplies of turkeys and are taking  advance orders now. Reserve your turkey ASAP!

The turkeys from Grass Works Meat Farm in Seaford, DE, are free from chemicals, antibiotics, artificial additives and growth hormones. 
Price per pound: $3.50

Highland Orchards in Wilmington, DE, sells antibiotic- and hormone-free turkeys that enjoy life uncaged as they forage in pastures. Pick up your order at the orchard or at the farmer’s market in Fitler Square (Phila.).  
Price per pound: $3.65

At Griggstown Farm in Princeton, NJ, you’ll find all-natural, free-range turkeys and can choose from traditional white and Bourbon Red heritage turkeys. They’ll even brine and/or stuff the bird for you. If you’re pressed for time or not handy in the kitchen, they offer side dishes, breads, rolls and pies as well. Pick up your delicacies at the farm or at Headhouse Market (Phila.), Flemington Market (Flemington, NJ) or Bernardsville-Somerset Feed and Grain (Bernardsville, NJ).

Turkeys at Bendy Brook Farm in Oley, PA, eat organic, soy-free, GMO-free grain and forage in the farm’s pastures. You can get your turkey at the farm or at a pickup spot in Collegeville or Swarthmore, PA.

Canter Hill Farm in Malvern, PA, raises both traditional white and heritage (Naragansett and Bourbon Red) turkeys that forage in pastures and woods. They also eat soy-free organic feed and are humanely processed. You can pick up your preordered turkey at the farm or at Eagleview Farmer’s Market in Exton, PA.
