Timeless Tales & Silly Shows

From favorite folktales to wacky balloon antics, theaters raise their curtains to delightful and engaging performances. Here’s what’s on stage at three popular South Jersey theaters for the new year.

The Broadway Theatre of Pitman launches its season with a classic retelling of The Three Little Pigs, Jan. 21-22. Monthly, one-hour shows for ages 3-9 and their families are presented on a Friday at 10am and the consecutive Saturday at 10am & 1pm. Another pig story, Charlotte’s Web, will be shown in February, followed by the silly educational show School House Rock! $7-$9.

At The Ritz Theatre Co. in Haddon Twp., Ritzy the Wolf leads participatory performances of children’s stories. The first show of 2011 is Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates, about a boy who longs to be in an ice skating race where the prize is a pair of silver skates, Jan. 13-15. Fairytales follow: Rapunzel, Feb. 3-5, and The Prince and the Pauper, March 10-12. Shows are presented once a month, Thursday-Saturday, 10am each day with an extra 1pm show on Saturday.

Bugs & BalloonsKelsey Theatre at Mercer County Community College starts off 2011’s Kelsey Kids series with a balloon show presented by Bugs and Balloons, a husband-and-wife duo, Jan. 22. In February, you can see three shows — the classic tale about the puppet who longs to be a real boy: Pinocchio, Feb. 4-6, along with High School Musical 2, Jr., Feb. 25-27, and Pippi Longstocking, Feb. 26. $8-$10.
