Camp 2015 Preview: Coming Attractions

A sneak peek for summer 2015

Summer 2015 will be here before you know it. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s new & exciting at Delaware Valley camps!

If kids ran the zoo

Brandywine Zoo Summer Zoo Camp, Wilmington, DE

By popular demand, additional weekly sessions of Junior Zoo Keepers have been added, with two distinct age-tailored tracks (8-10 and 11-13). Campers learn to care for the resident animals (older kids will actually perform some animal care). Other topics include animal diets (again, the older group will prep meals), vet care and exhibit design.

Brae-zen news

Burn Brae Day Camp of Creative Arts, Dresher, PA

New activities for this art camp’s 34th year include Movie Production, Games for the Brain, Improvisational Theater and Vintage Sports. The Pastry Arts building and Technology Center are being enlarged, and the theater’s getting fresh flooring. Finally, a new teen program will include weekly guest speakers, career exploration, community service and leadership skills.

Outdoor/indoor updates

Camp Kef at the Kaiserman JCC, Wynnewood, PA

This specialty camp within a day camp (kids customize their activities within the areas of sports and art) provides a brand new outdoor swim club as well as child-ready indoor rooms for rainy days.

LIFE lessons

Camp Lee Mar, Lackawaxen, PA

This 62-year-old camp for kids with special needs introduces the Lee Mar L.I.F.E. Pro- gram (“Living. Independently. Functional. Education.”). Senior campers (ages 18–21) will get supervised on-the-job training while developing the independent living skills (cooking, doing laundry, banking) needed to transition to adult life.

Girls vs. boys!

Camp Ockanickon / Camp Matollionequay, Medford, NJ

Kids at these brother/sister Pine Barrens overnight camps can look forward to new special event days like a 4th of July Carni- val and Boys Camp vs. Girls Camp. They’ll cool off from all that activity by jumping on and off of new lake obstacle inflatables.

Big Top talent

Camp Pegasus, Ardmore, PA

In partnership with the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts, Pegasus campers will learn to ride a unicycle, walk a tightrope, balance feathers on their head, spin plates on a stick and juggle balls.

Soccer & specialties

Camp Ramah, Lakewood, PA

With more intensive specialty concentrations on tap, Ramah continues its partnership with UK Elite Soccer for a weeklong soccer clinic. Ramah also expands its special needs inclusion program and garden-based farm-to-table cooking program.

Spree-for-all

Community Arts Center, Wallingford, PA

As part of the art camp’s Summer Spree 2015, activity-roster additions include new looks at sculpture, pottery, painting, mosaics, Lego building, hula hooping, music and theater.

Mixed media

Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, DE

The museum’s summer art camp boasts new art-related themes, explored through drawing, painting, ceramics and more.

Construction zone

Easter Seals Camp Fairlee, Chestertown, MD

The 60-year-old all-abilities residential camp is replacing much of its infrastructure. The massive construction project incorporates four new cabins, a health center and an 11,000-square-foot activity center, plus a dining hall expansion.

Expanded explorations

Lavner Camps, multiple locations

New to Lavner’s expansive roster of spe- cialty camps in sports, technology and the arts are the all-around Exploration Day Camp (in Merion Station, PA) and the resi- dential Tech R3volution (at West Chester University). The Lavner Camps Store is also set to launch in Narberth, PA, offering a selection of learning toys and products.

Sing a new song

Newark Arts Alliance — Camp Imagine, Newark, DE

This full-day visual and performance arts camp has amplified its singing track. Kids will play rhythm games, participate in percussion pieces and combine call-and- response and movement into songs.

Zip it up

Tall Pines Day Camp, Williamstown, NJ

Adventurous play will be augmented here with a dual 15-foot-high, 300-foot-long Junior Zip Tower for campers 6 and younger. There’s also a new air-conditioned Lego Room specifically designed for junior campers to work with small manipulatives (aka, 16,000 colorful Legos). And a 20-foot pirate ship, fortress and a giant play web have been added to the existing playground.
