A book bag is the rare necessity that allows students to show their personality and strut their stuff in the school hallway. Here are some trends that’ll keep kids ahead of the proverbial (back)pack come September.

Unisex camo

Girls and boys alike will report for school duty with this trending military-inspired pattern, available at Kohl's or Zappos.com.

Multitonal

Teen Vogue touted color-blocked backpacks and lunch totes as an “it look” for the upcoming school year. Gap’s got a variety of options and palettes.

Extreme bolds

Boy-approved electric bolds are in season with colors like “High Vis Yellow” from Under Armour, “High Risk Red” from Jansport and “Classic Neon Green” from Revive.

Patterns galore

Girly-girl florals, sporty stripes and polka dots from the likes of Jansport and Roxy, retro tie-dye from Neff and what-a-hoot owls from Skip Hop and others are just a few of the wide-ranging pack patterns on the rise. —Jamie Weiss
