Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks

Map321 S 4th St
Philadelphia, PA
  • History Museums & Sites

Visit the houses overseen by the Society to learn more about these less-familiar historic gems. The Powel House, home to Revolutionary-era mayor Samuel Powel, hosted George & Martha Washington’s 20th wedding anniversary in the ballroom. The Physick House was where Dr. Physick, a prominent 19th century physician & creator of America’s first soda pop, lived. Boys will be intrigued because one of the artifacts is a jar of live leeches. The Powel & Physick Houses host interactive living history programs, Thurs.-Sun. Other Landmarks are Revolutionary War-era houses Waynesborough & Grumblethorpe.

KIDBIT: American Girl doll fans may recognize the Physick House from its appearance in the book An Addy Mystery: Shadows on Society Hill.
