At this “pleasure garden” designed as a haven to unwind & connect with nature, families can go on self-guided walks, enjoy picnics and look for fish & turtles in the pond.
Visiting Tips: Pick up a map & kids’ booklet with things to search for in the garden, such as the rooster sculptures around the trails. (“Chanticleer” is French for “rooster.”)
In Bloom: Daffodils & flowering trees blossom in April & May. Go to the garden website before your visit; weekly updates post what’s popping up.

The Highlands Mansion & Gardens
7001 Sheaff Lane, Fort Washington, PA
This 18th century mansion features a formal garden enclosed by stone walls, with the earliest wall built in the early 19th century. Explore the grounds on recently restored pathways, look for interesting sculptures & pinch the leaves of medicinal herb plants to take in the lovely scents.
Visiting Tips: Families can visit the garden anytime. Call to receive a scavenger hunt activity for elementary age kids during your visit, or to schedule tours of the house or gardens.
Save the Date: Admission is free on Community Day, a family-friendly spring festival, Sun., May 23, 2-4pm. Reservations recommended.

FREE Jenkins Arboretum

At these tranquil gardens, families can walk the paved trails, enjoy picnics & look for turtles in the pond. For adults, Jenkins offers yoga, gardening & art classes.

Perfect for Preschoolers: A new Small Wonders series for ages 3-5 & parents on Tuesdays, April 13-May 18, includes outdoor exploration, stories, a snack & a craft. ($15 per session or $75 for entire series.)
