Confession: I am a last-minute holiday gift shopper. As much asI admire those organized types who have checked-off lists and wrapped presents by now, I work better up against a deadline — occupational hazard.
Just because I’m a seasonal procrastinator doesn’t mean that gifts and the greater significance of the holidays haven’t been on my mind. Our December issue is full of ideas to help families get through this festive yet often overwhelming time of year with grace, good health and good humor (more than necessary when sibling rivalry turns present-opening into a competitive sport).

Hands-down, the best holiday gift I ever received was a subscription to Seventeen magazine back when I was 12. Clothes, boys, movies, friends — the articles all spoke directly to my tween self, and I devoured every word, cover to cover. If my parents paid $10 for 12 issues, I’d be surprised. But what the gift lacked in initial financial outlay has recouped itself immeasurably since.
I have no doubt that gift set me on a path toward a job I love, transcending its holiday moment. If all goes well, once I finally get to my shopping this year, I’ll choose a gift for my sons that stays with them long after December 2013 has gone, fulfilling the love inherent in the holiday season.
