It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
Welcome to all the new mateys we made at the Old City Seaport Festival. (If you visited our Pirate’s Lair, click to spy yourself and see if you won some treasure.) This coming weekend’s particularly bright, with family events that showcase the full moon, lighthouses and glowing jack-o’-lanterns.
Philly & the 'burbs
Greet the full moon with a traditional otsukimi (moon-viewing) at Philly’s Shofuso Japanese House & Garden. The weekend-long cultural party (each night at 7pm) features tea ceremonies, sweets-making classes, kamishibai storytelling, kids’ activities and Japanese choral performances. Space is limited; reserve your spot quickly.
The most sincere pumpkin patch in Swarthmore comes to life at the Players Club production of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (Fri., 7pm; Sat., 4:30pm; Sun., 11am). Bet that Round-Headed Kid gets a rock!
Who needs reality-show competitions? See the real thing Sun. at the 3rd Annual World's Greatest Farmer Showdown. Amid a country fair setting at Collegeville’s Longview Center for Agriculture, local farm teams will vie in the Pumpkin Shot Put, Wheel Barrow Obstacle Course and a harvesting competition.
Lend a helping hand by hoofing it during PAWS for People’s 5th annual Wag-n-Walk & 5K Run, to benefit the group’s therapeutic-pet visitation services. Stick around Newark’s Glasgow Park after the races for pooch-participatory events like an owner/dog lookalike contest and best trick presentation.
St. Edmond’s Academy in Wilmington goes all aglow Sat. evening with its 4th Annual Giant Pumpkin Carving Display. The FREE event showcases 50 illuminated, intricately carved pumpkins, hot apple cider and classroom trick-or-treating.
The Lighthouse Challenge spurs you to shore up the preservation of the state’s historic lighthouses all weekend long. Hop among 15 light-shining sites (including stops in Cape May, Absecon, Barnetgat and Sandy Hook). If you climb to the beacons’ top, you just might earn a souvenir.
Car-nut kids need to wheel over to the FREE Corvette Show (Sun., 11am-5pm) at the Village Green in Historic Smithville.
Join in support with the MK readers whose kids have hearing loss at the Hearing Loss Association of America’s Walk4Hearing, Sun. at West Windsor’s Mercy County Park West.
