Weekend Planner: Oct. 12

MetroKids Pirate's Lair at the Old City Seaport Festival

The MK crew will man the MetroKids Pirate's Lair during the 2nd Annual Old City Seaport Festival at the Independence Seaport Museum. Find us from 10am - 5pm Sat. and Sun. on the museum's second floor, where your young buccaneers can swashbuckle in style, try on a peg leg and make their own hooks and eye patches. Find a full schedule of events here.  Now, onto the weekend's land-lubbing fun.

Philly & the burbs

Give those Halloween costumes an early run during the annual Shiverfest at Gladwyne's Riverbend Environmental Education Center. Slightly spooky events include pumpkin decorating and tossing, storytelling around a campfire (bring those flashlights!), trail trick-or-treating and a live reptile show. The ghostly good time lasts from 4-9pm, with the haunted hike setting off at 6:30pm.

Voice your approval at the Bristol Riverside Theatre when ventriloquist Kevin Johnson and his anything-but-dumb dummies take the stage. You might have seen Johnson do his stuff on America's Got Talent and Letterman; check out his vocal trickery up close on Sat. (2pm & 8pm) and Sun. (3pm).

South Jersey

Do you know Mum Bear, the Camden Children's Garden mascot? Meet her at the venue's weekend-long Family Festival (1 - 4pm both days), when she leads the pumpkin parade and inspires pumpkin-themed crafts, stories and activities in the beautiful chrysanthemum garden she's named for.

Tweens and teens out for thrills and chills will find just that when Psycho Trail opens for the season at Freedom Park in Medford, weekend evenings from 7 - 9:30pm. Edge-of-your-seat attractions include the Infected Zombie Maze, the Defunct 3D Clown House and a new scare called Blood Thirsty. Keep in mind the recommended age minimum of 10; this is one of the area's more intense Halloween happenings.

Blackbird Forest, part of 3 Palms Plants & Petting Zoo in Clayton, has received a macabre makeover: Scarecrows, spiders, a mildly eerie graveyard and other spine-tickling surprises line its (still generously lit) trails. See the Boo! at the Zoo sights Fridays and Saturdays (through Oct. 26), 7-9pm, then warm up with cider and roasted marshmallows.

Apple and scrapple merge as more than just a rhyme. The two culinary treats headline the Bridgeville Apple Scrapple Festival, Fri. evening and all day Sat. throughout town. Kid-happy happenings include a ride-filled carnival at the library, skillet toss and scrapple chunkin' contests and a separate kids' area with pony rides, games and the town's new Bookmobile.
