MetroKids' Top Picks for This Weekend

Celebrate Philly’s diverse parks during LOVE Your Park Week (Sat.-Sat.) with eight days of events and activities at 100+ parks in the city. Service Day kicks off the week; join forces with other volunteers to clean and beautify your favorite park. In the afternoon, drop by the Washington Ave. Green for FREE Crafts Day for lunch and make-and-take Mother’s Day gifts inspired by nature.

Get your eyes and ears ready Sat. for the 31st Annual World Series of Birding, where birders of all ages and expertise count as many species as they can in the state of New Jersey within 24 hours. Even if you don’t compete officially, NJ Audubon encourages you to see how many birds you can spot and ID in your own backyard for Enjoy the Birds Day.

It’s time for the beloved Delaware spring tradition: the FREE Wilmington Flower Market. The annual three-day plant, flower and craft sale is back at Wilmington’s Rockford Park through Sat., accompanied by a flurry of carnival rides, live music and the season opening of Rockford Tower, which families can climb to view the city.

More Local Events the Kids Will Love

Drop by the FREE Children’s Festival Sat. at Historic Smithville & Village Greene in Smithville, NJ. Activities include live animal presentations, an aquarium touch tank and a bubble station.

A scavenger hunt, putt-putt golf, story time, martial arts demos and the chance to create an art mural are on tap at the Skyline United Methodist Church’s FREE Community Day Celebration Sat. in Wilmington, DE.

Search for creepy-crawlies like crayfish, water beetles and dragonfly nymphs, then learn what they tell you about the stream during Tyler Arboretum’s Family Aquatic Bug Hunt in Media, PA on Sun.

Mother's Day Events

Celebrate 40 years of Philly’s The Clay Studio during the FREE Fired Up at Forty event, 40 hours of fun Fri. into Sat. with activities like ice cream bowl decorating and an instrument-making jam session for kids.

Get ready to dance Fri. night when Koo Koo Kanga Roo opens for The Aquabats at Philly’s Theatre of the Living Arts.

Send faerie wishes, build houses for woodland spirits and enjoy live entertainment at Camp Ramblewood’s Maryland Faerie Festival Sat. & Sun. in Darlington, MD.

On Sat., spend National Train Day at Yorklyn, DE’s Auburn Heights Preserve with train rides and train-related crafts, activities and story time.

Don’t miss Elmwood Park Zoo’s Season Kickoff Carnival in Norristown, PA through Sun., where families enjoy rides, games and food in the parking lot.

Plant beans, carrots & squash; harvest early greens; visit farm animals; and enjoy pottery, hearth cooking, bread baking & woodworking during Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation’s Spring Sowing Day, Sat. in Newtown Square, PA.

In addition to the 22nd running of the races on Sun., the Willowdale Steeplechase in Kennett Square, PA includes Jack Russell terrier races, pony races and a Kids’ Alley, where kids can race stick ponies and learn how vets keep animals healthy.
