Scouting is a family affair

Each Saturday my family dons the uniform of Boy and Girl Scouts and spends the day at White Rock Baptist Church. Any given day, there is some scout related activity in our home. In the fall it’s recruiting for our Cub pack, in the winter it’s selling Girl Scout cookies, in the summer it’s preparing for camping and traveling. Scouting wasn't always a way of life for my family. Originally my son was a Cub Scout because he needed something to do with all of his extra energy.  When I would visit the pack, I was struck by the young ladies who attended Girl Scouts. The girls had poise and impeccable manners. When my daughter began to go through her teenage angst, signing her up for Girl Scouts was a suggestion to get some structure into her life....

Why I send my son to camp

Summer camp always seemed weird to me and made me think of horror movies like Friday the 13th.  I never imagined sending my children to camp, especially since I’m a stay-at-home mom who never went to camp.  Even after writing down the numerous summer activities I engaged in as a child, I still ended up in August, bored and halfheartedly unearthing crafts, forgotten toys and trying and failing to create exciting games before succumbing to laziness and missing school once again. Finding summer activities never used to be a challenge for me.  I had small children and belonged to a club where the weeks were sufficiently scheduled with fun kid activities and a break in the mommy monotony.  All my friends stayed at home, too, so I could meet up with them at a...
