11/07/11Report: Widespread School Sexual HarassmentSexual harassment is part of everyday life in middle and high schools, according to Crossing the Line: Sexual Harassment at Schools, a report commissioned by the American Association of University Women. The survey of 1,965 students in grades 7-12 conducted in May and June 2011 revealed: • Nearly half (48%) of students experienced some form of sexual harassment in the 2010–11 school year, and the majority of those students (87%) said it had a negative effect on them. •Verbal harassment (unwelcome sexual comments, jokes, or gestures) made up the bulk of the incidents, but physicalharassment also common. 11/01/11Report: Sugary Drink Ads Target KidsMakers of sodas and sports, energy and fruit drinks are disguising unhealthy products and marketing to children, according to Sugary Drink F.A.C.T.S., a Yale University study delivered Oct. 31 to the American Public Health Association’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Researchers at Yale University’s Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity studied 600 drinks made by 14 manufacturers. “We found that children’s exposure to TV ads for full-calorie soda doubled from 2008 to 2010,” says Jennifer Harris, the report’s author. “We also found that energy drinks are heavily marketed to children and teens.” Among the report’s other findings: Many fruit and energy drinks contain as much sugar and calories as non-diet sodas.... |
