05/19/11Two-Thirds of PA Schools Expect LayoffsTwo thirds of Pennsylvania school districts plan to lay off instructional staff next school year, and more than 7 in 10 expect to cut instructional programs, according to a survey conducted by the Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials (PASBO) and the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators (PASA).Facing a $1.232 billion statewide reduction in government aid, 86% of districts say class size will increase, 71% will cut elective courses, 64% will eliminate tutoring, 51% will drop summer school and 31% will cut all-day kindergarten. 05/09/11Study: Autism Rate Is Higher than ThoughtA Yale study of 55,000 South Korean children ages 7-12 has shown that 1 in 38 (2.64%) have an autism spectrum disorders (ASD), an incidence far higher than previously thought in the U.S. and elsewhere. The generally accepted U.S. incidence is that 1 in 110 children (0.91%) and 1 in 70 boys have an ASD. For the study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, researchers screened nearly all 7- to 12-year-olds in Goyan City, Korea. The frequency of ASDs was similar to U.S. levels in the community’s special education programs.
