3 Delco Parish Schools Close
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is closing three Delaware County parish schools.
Our Lady of Charity School in Brookhaven, St. Kevin School in Springfield and St. Philomena School in Landsdowne all projected sharp enrollment declines for the 2011-2012 school year.
Our Lady of Charity registrations for next year have dropped to 89 students from 176 this year; St. Kevin projected a decline to 93 students from 158; and St. Philomena registrations have dropped to 88 students from the current 141.
"We waited as long as possible in the hope that reregistration numbers would increase and that our schools could remain open next year," says archdiocesan schools superintendent Mary E. Rochford in a statement.
St. Kevin parents objected to the closure at a meeting with Rochford, contending that 132 students have enrolled for next year, but the superintendent told them that the decision is irreversible.
Our Lady of Charity students will be welcomed at St. Joseph parish school in Ashton. St. Kevin students will be served by St. Francis of Assisi School in Springfield. St. Philomena students will be invited to attend either St. Andrew parish school in Drexel Hill or St. Laurence in Upper Darby.
