Kids and the Boston Marathon Bombings

Kids and the Boston Marathon Bombings

If we as adults have problems coming to terms with the tragic events that occurred at the Boston Marathon earlier this week, just think how our kids feel. My 7th-grader came home from school the day after the bombings asking if a little girl had really been killed. He'd gotten some misinformation from a friend on the bus. It was little relief to tell him that while no young girl had been a casualty, an 8-year-old boy had indeed lost his life. Keeping this news from my son was not an option: He'd see the truth on whatever home page popped up while he checked his phone or opened the laptop to do homework. Talking to our kids in the wake of tragedy is never easy. It helps, though, that after such an event, expert advice on how to navigate the delicate topic is abundantly...

Moms Rally for Gun Control

Moms Rally for Gun Control

This past Saturday, Brandon Holt, a 6-year-old Toms River boy accidentally shot dead when a 4-year-old friend picked up a rifle during a playdate, was laid to rest. That same day, a group of area mothers rallied at LOVE Park in Center City Philadelphia to call for stricter gun control laws, including universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons. Hours before, Francine Wheeler, whose 6-year-old son Ben was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre four months ago, delivered President Obama's weekly radio address, speaking eloquently and movingly about her loss while calling for Congress to act swiftly. No matter what your views on gun control are, the debate has come to the Delaware Valley — and it's an important one. As the Senate takes up the...

Happy International Children's Book Day!

Happy International Children's Book Day!

It's International Children's Book Day, the annual celebration of kiddie lit that's taken place since 1968 on April 2, the birthdate of Hans Christian Andersen. We love kids' books here at MetroKids, and our award-winning book reviews have long been a highlight of our pages. In our just-out April issue, reviewer Frank Lipsius looks at a couple of irresistible rhymers. The occasion also seems a good one to share news from One Book, Every Young Child. The 2013 selection for this Pennsylvania-based early literacy initiative is The Bus for Us, a picture book by Suzanne Bloom, geared to preschoolers and Kindergarten students. The One Book website details the author appearances, interactive traveling trunks and library and museum events scheduled statewide to introduce...
